Product Overview

waxed canvas backpack rucksack in Iceland

The Canvas Quality
Built with uncommonly thick 24 oz waxed canvas from Scotland, this extremely strong and water-resistant canvas backpack is a life time bag. This canvas backpack can be carried using the Old Bull grab handle or the adjustable 34"" Old Bull leather shoulder straps that are contoured for a comfortable fit. Dark Coffee Brown Old Bull leather pad lines the back and bottom of the pack for comfort and protection from inside contents; The leather is stamped with month and year of construction. Exterior leather pad of the canvas backpack doubles as an exterior pocket and allows for items, such as a tripod or ax, to be carried under the bag. Sewn leather tabs on the side of the backpack for lashing or hanging extra gear. Drawstring closure on the backpack is with an adjustable flap to keep out the rain; The main flap secures with easy-access pad eye closure. Wide-open, simple design with three interior pockets. It is over-engineered with high-quality materials for when your life depends on it; Can (with much effort or very sharp knife) be shredded and wrapped to make a torch. Will outlast you and maybe your kids or even your kids' kids. Easily fits a 15" MacBook, iPad, or Leather Portfolio - all with room to spare.

To be noted:
Waxed canvas is the original water resistant fabric, and comes with the attendant charms and quirks of being a centuries-old technology. In the young days of your bag, you may experience slight wax transfer from the canvas to any particularly absorbent contents in the bag (such as paper, etc). It is recommended that these contents are kept in a case while in the bag. Something to keep in mind as the bag breaks in.

I cannot believe what I'm seeing

I am a woman who is almost 50 and I am stunned with the craftmanship and quality of this backpack. I have been looking for YEARS for a backpack but none ever measured up....until now. This is a beautiful beast of a backpack and I can't wait to break it in. I am truly impressed. Thank you Saddleback for checking off one of many things on my bucket list.

    There Is A Man...

This pack is perfect for a grown man. I'm 54, 6'1" and 220lbs...and it looks like this pack belongs on my shoulder.
It holds a lot of weight without issue and the color blends into the background quite easily. The fabric is tougher than me and doesn't mind moves with my movements without resistance and is a pleasure to carry.
The inside side pocket without the flap holds a RooGrr three five seven in it's iwb perfectly snug.
The adjustable, one-handed flap for opening is genius and the drawstring closure is quite useful.
The only thing I'd add would be one D-ring on the outside to clip a water bottle, hat or tie a bandanna to. Food for thought.

    I would rate 5 stars,

I would rate 5 stars, if I understood the story behind the cut portion of top tab both side.
There must be wonderful story, I believe. Anyway, I love this simple backpack.

    No complaints here. I ordered

No complaints here. I ordered two weather proof bags and both arrived with no notable defects. They are rugged, durable and really feel like my grandkids would get 100 years of use out of them. I recommend Saddleback Leather products to all my friends.

    The Only Pack Worth Considering

I needed a pack for hunting but didn’t want the typical pack that attempts to substitute pockets for quality. My hunting gear is a mix of traditional high quality wool and oil cloth/tin cloth. I wanted a pack that could keep pace and last more than a few seasons. This pack is it. The quality exceeded my expectations. It’s hard to explain the level of ruggedness and quality. I’ll be dead of old age by the time it’s properly broken in. Wow, what a pack. If I had a fantasy about making my own pack to my own high standards it still would not meet the level of craftsmanship poured into this thing. I haven’t had this kind of bang for my buck in many years. Bravo.

I have countless bags from SBL and this bag shares many of the same reasons why I continue to come back and back for more bags. I really like the Mountainback line. This is great day pack and use it for work. Holds everything I need for the day. Looks great, built to last, a bit heavy (as with all SBL bags, this is a good thing, means it is quality), and a bit expense, but it will be the last bag you will need!

    Wish I’d Waited.

This bag is serious need of being re-engineered. The flap isn’t big enough, the shoulder straps are too short, and it needs reenforced on the flap so that it doesn’t look a sad blob when sat down.
I’m sure once these sell out (at almost the cost of a full-leather bag, mind you), Dave will probably bring out the fixed design. We’ll see if Saddleback will honor their satisfaction policy.
